If you've spent any time on social media, you've probably seen advertisements promising to uncover the "root cause" of your symptoms through extensive lab testing. Some companies recommend thousands of dollars in testing before you've even had a meaningful conversation about your health.
At Apothecary & Co., that's not how we practice. As pharmacists with training in functional medicine, we believe testing should answer a question, not create more confusion.
In many cases, a detailed health history, medication review, and discussion about your symptoms tell us far more than ordering every available lab panel.
More Testing Doesn't Always Mean Better Care
Functional medicine testing has become incredibly popular, and for good reason. Many specialized tests can provide valuable information that traditional blood work may not capture.
But that doesn't mean every person needs every test. Our philosophy is simple:

- Start with your story.
- Review your current medications and supplements.
- Review any previous laboratory work.
- Understand your symptoms and health goals.
- Order testing only when the results will help guide treatment decisions.
We don't believe in testing simply because a panel exists.
We believe in recommending the right test, for the right patient, at the right time.
We Almost Always Start with Basic Blood Work
Before recommending advanced functional testing, we almost always like to begin with foundational blood work.
Why? Because many common symptoms (fatigue, brain fog, weight changes, hair loss, low energy, poor sleep, digestive concerns, and mood changes) can often be better understood with routine laboratory testing.
Whenever possible, we encourage patients to work with their primary care provider to have these labs ordered. If you have health insurance, many of these tests may be covered, making this the most cost-effective place to start.
If you don't have insurance, don't worry. We can help you obtain high-quality laboratory testing through Ulta Lab Tests at transparent self-pay pricing.
We've also created an entire guide explaining the foundational blood work we recommend and why each marker matters. If you're interested in learning more, be sure to read our Blueprint Bloodwork blog.
Starting with the basics often gives us the information we need before considering more specialized testing.
Advanced Testing We Frequently Recommend
DUTCH Hormone Testing
The DUTCH test provides a more comprehensive look at hormone production and hormone metabolism than traditional blood work alone. It can be particularly helpful for patients experiencing:

- Perimenopause or menopause symptoms
- Persistent fatigue
- Sleep disturbances
- Mood changes
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Complex hormone concerns that aren't fully explained by routine labs
This isn't a test we recommend for everyone, but for the right patient, it can provide valuable insight that helps guide treatment.
ZRT Saliva Hormone & Cortisol Testing
Certain hormones fluctuate throughout the day and may be better evaluated through saliva than with a single blood draw. Depending on your symptoms, saliva testing may help us better understand:
- Cortisol patterns
- The body's stress response
- Sex hormone balance
Like every test we recommend, it's ordered because it fits the clinical picture, not because it's trendy.
Other Functional Tests We May Recommend
KBMO Food Sensitivity Testing
Food sensitivity testing is one of the most misunderstood areas of functional medicine.
It's important to understand that food sensitivity testing is not the same as testing for a true food allergy. Food allergies involve the immune system and can be life-threatening. Food sensitivities are different and may contribute to symptoms in some individuals.
We may consider KBMO Food Sensitivity Testing when someone has persistent symptoms such as:
- Chronic digestive discomfort
- Bloating
- Recurring headaches or migraines
- Joint discomfort
- Certain skin concerns
- Symptoms that continue despite making basic dietary and lifestyle changes
We don't recommend food sensitivity testing simply because someone wants to know "what foods are bad."
Instead, we use it as one piece of the puzzle. Results should always be interpreted alongside your symptoms, medical history, dietary habits, and overall health. They should never be viewed as a permanent list of foods you'll never eat again.
Comprehensive Stool Testing
Your digestive system plays an important role in your overall health, but not every digestive symptom requires advanced stool testing.
When appropriate, we may recommend comprehensive stool testing, such as testing offered by Genova Diagnostics, to gain additional insight into digestive health.
These tests may evaluate:

- Digestive function
- Markers of gastrointestinal inflammation
- The balance of beneficial and potentially harmful microorganisms
- Digestive enzyme function
- Other markers that help us better understand what's happening within the digestive tract
We typically consider comprehensive stool testing when patients have persistent digestive symptoms, symptoms that haven't improved with initial treatment, or a more complex clinical picture that warrants additional investigation.
Like every other test we recommend, the goal isn't simply to collect more information; it's to obtain information that helps guide meaningful treatment decisions.
Tests We May Not Recommend Right Away
Sometimes patients come in asking for extensive testing because they've seen it online or heard about it on social media. In many cases, we recommend slowing down first.
Examples may include:
- Large food sensitivity panels without symptoms suggesting they're needed
- Broad hormone testing when symptoms point toward another cause
- Expensive specialty testing before reviewing medications, nutrition, sleep, lifestyle factors, and basic blood work
Sometimes the answer isn't another test.
Sometimes it's identifying a medication side effect.
Sometimes it's correcting a nutrient deficiency.
Sometimes it's improving sleep, nutrition, stress management, or other lifestyle factors.
Good healthcare isn't about ordering more tests; it's about understanding the whole person.
Every Test Should Change the Plan
One question we ask before recommending any test is: "Will this result change what we do?"
If the answer is no, then it may not be the right test today. That's how we approach every patient who walks through our doors.
Whether we're discussing routine blood work, hormone testing, food sensitivity testing, or comprehensive stool analysis, our philosophy remains the same:
We don't recommend testing because it's popular. We don't recommend testing because it's expensive. And we certainly don't recommend testing just to hand you a stack of lab results.
We recommend testing because we believe it will provide meaningful information that helps us make better decisions about your health.
Our Goal

At Apothecary & Co., we don't believe in one-size-fits-all protocols or expensive testing bundles that every patient "needs."
We believe healthcare should be individualized. Some patients benefit tremendously from advanced functional medicine testing. Others may only need a conversation, a medication review, routine blood work, or a few targeted recommendations.
Our goal is never to order more testing than necessary. Our goal is to help you understand your health, make informed decisions, and develop a plan that's personalized to you.
Sometimes that means advanced testing. Sometimes it means starting with the basics.
And sometimes, the best recommendation we can make is that you don't need another test at all. That's the difference thoughtful, patient-centered care can make.
