Heavy Menstrual Cycles: Your Body May Be Trying to Tell You Something

heavy menstrual cycles
August 3, 2026

One of the most common concerns we hear from women in our functional medicine practice is, "My periods have become so heavy." While heavy menstrual bleeding is common, it should never be dismissed as "just part of being a woman."

From a functional medicine perspective, we always ask one important question:

Why are your periods heavy in the first place?

Rather than simply focusing on stopping the symptoms, we want to understand what your body may be trying to communicate.

Looking Through the Functional Medicine Lens

One of the most common contributors we see is estrogen dominance.

Estrogen dominance doesn't necessarily mean your estrogen levels are "high." It often means there is an imbalance between estrogen and progesterone, where estrogen has a stronger influence than it should. This imbalance can contribute to symptoms such as:

balancing hormones naturally

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Painful periods
  • Breast tenderness
  • PMS
  • Mood changes
  • Fibroids or endometriosis in some women

Many factors can contribute to estrogen dominance, including:

  • Chronic stress
  • Poor gut health, which can affect how estrogen is eliminated
  • Diets low in fiber and high in ultra-processed foods
  • Excess body fat, which can produce additional estrogen
  • Exposure to environmental chemicals that may mimic estrogen (sometimes called xenoestrogens), found in certain plastics, pesticides, and personal care products
  • Reduced liver function or sluggish estrogen detoxification pathways

Often, it's not just one thing: it's the combination of many small factors over time.

The Conventional Approach

From a conventional medical perspective, treatment may include hormonal birth control, medications to reduce bleeding, or procedures such as an endometrial ablation. For some women, these treatments are absolutely appropriate and can significantly improve quality of life.

There is certainly a time and place for conventional therapies, and they can be life-changing for the right patient. However, from our perspective, we also want to understand why the heavy bleeding developed.

Heavy menstrual cycles can sometimes be your body's way of signaling that something is out of balance. If we only quiet the symptom without addressing what contributed to it, the underlying imbalance may still remain. While symptoms don't always progress into something else, unresolved health issues can continue to affect overall well-being.

That's why we believe it's valuable to look upstream whenever possible.

Digging Deeper with Functional Testing

If you're experiencing heavy periods, hormone testing may provide helpful information.

One of our favorite tools is the DUTCH Test, which looks beyond hormone levels alone. It also evaluates how your body is producing, metabolizing, and eliminating hormones. Understanding these pathways can help identify whether estrogen metabolism or detoxification may need additional support and can guide a more personalized wellness plan.

Testing doesn't replace a diagnosis from your healthcare provider, but it can offer valuable insight into what may be contributing to your symptoms.

Supporting Healthy Hormone Balance

Every woman is different, but we often recommend building a strong nutritional foundation before reaching for more aggressive interventions. Some foundational nutrients that support healthy hormone function include:

  • B vitamins
  • Vitamin D
  • Magnesium

We also encourage eating plenty of fiber and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale. These vegetables contain natural compounds that support healthy estrogen metabolism. For women who struggle to eat enough vegetables, a high-quality greens powder may be another option to help increase daily intake.

Of course, supplements should be individualized based on your health history, medications, and nutritional needs.

You Have Options

If you're experiencing heavy menstrual cycles, know that you don't have to simply "live with it." There may be several reasons your body is responding this way, and understanding the root cause can help guide the next steps.

We always encourage working with a licensed healthcare professional who can evaluate your symptoms, rule out serious medical conditions, and help determine the most appropriate treatment plan for you. We also encourage patients to educate themselves, ask questions, and understand all of their available options.

At our functional medicine and compounding pharmacy, we believe the goal isn't simply to manage symptoms: it's to better understand what your body is trying to tell you and support it in the healthiest way possible.
